Bruges tastes

Food policy is not static. Bruges was one of the first cities in Flanders to put food policy on the map. However, perspectives change. Knowledge is accumulated. Therefore, the time is ripe to look ahead again and refine where relevant.

Let us and Rikolto embarked on a participatory process with the stakeholders in Bruges. They reflected on the success stories of the past years and outlined the guidelines for the future. In the final step, actions are resolved, injecting fresh dynamics into Bruges' food policy.

With over ten years of expertise in food policy, Let Us provides not only process facilitation but also inspiration from both domestic and international cities. In the final phase, Let us also takes up the pen to translate all input into a robust policy document.

The new version of Brugge Smaakt revolves around four pillars

  • Bruges tastes healthy for people and planet

  • Bruges tastes respectful from soil to mouth

  • Bruges tastes good: honest flavours for every day and everyone

  • Bruges tastes better together

Next, Let us also joined forces with Lettemieke Mulder of TheRockGroup. Together they worked on a City Report for the city, bringing together all available data on food. Data sets from Flemish and local sources were brought together and analysed from a food perspective. This led to new insights that further shape policy.

Then, 2 case studies were further explored based on both inspiration from other cities and workshops with the actors involved to identify possible new food actions and levers for this in Bruges. These zoomed in on the organisational model and a possible food council on the one hand and the spatial translation of the food policy on the other.
